Not very long time ago, in all kingdoms and republics not very far away, people in marketing departments found out that all the pretty clickable banner ads weren’t being clicked. What are people doing on the internet instead? They create, share and consume stories! Just like they were doing around campfires thousands of years ago.
Tell stories
If you want people to remember you and keep coming back as customers, you need to be a part of that conversation, bring your own stories and provide useful information. I could of course also point out that since the Penguin update, publishing engaging content is really the best way to optimise your website for Google’s crawlers. And that 61% of people feel better about a company that delivers custom content and are more likely to buy from that company. But deep down, it’s really that simple. You have to be where you customers are and provide them with fun and useful stories, in text, pictures and video.
Keep it simple
Following simple advice is often hard though. When I worked as a journalist, editors would remind me pretty much daily: “make the headline simple and punchy”. You are an expert in your field of business and you’d like to make sure your knowledge comes across. Writing a tweet that would make people interested in your product documentation updates is hard.
